4 Ways to Increase Your Email Open Rates

Although, we want to believe that social media is the primary and best way to market our business, email campaigns are still an extremely viable strategy when it comes to digital marketing.  In fact, it is estimated that even poor performing campaigns can still have a 25% or higher click rate.  This is one of the most important things you can do for your business today, as it ensures that your business stays at the forefront of your customers’ attention.

To continue fostering in strong performance, here’s 4 ways you can increase your email open rates:

Don’t Overlook the Subject Line

Consider the biggest reason why you might open an email in your inbox; aside from knowing who the sender is from.  The subject line!  Strong, engaging subject lines are what will cause a customer or client to become curious and want to open.  Subject lines that are dry are going to have the opposite effect – have someone unsubscribe.  Consider, for example, a line that reads, “Do You Know How to Market Your Business Using Email Campaigns” versus a subject line that reads “Watertree: How to Use Email Campaigns.”   Or, consider refraining from boring subject lines such as “August Newsletter.”

Subject lines should be dynamic and prompt the user to want to know more.

Determine What Time Works Best

There are certain times of day when your users might be more active, and willing to open promotional emails.  For instance, according to Mailchimp data, did you know that emails sent on weekdays have a more likely chance to be opened.

While you won’t know right out of the gate what days work best, you can do A/B testing (where A is one date and B is another) to get a sense of when the perfect time to send is.  To get you started, consider what type of audience you are working with and what they are most likely to be doing.  For example, do you think your audience would be more likely to open a promotional email in the morning, when they get to an office, or right after lunch?

Segment Your List and Use Automations

Technology is forever changing, and that is true for email campaign systems.  Many allow you to segment your email list into specific niches or target groups.  This is especially important, because not every person of your list likes the exact same things.  For instance, a book seller might find that certain users like one genre, such as romance, while others only like science fiction.  They could then segment their list so that the romance readers only get that content, while the sci-fi readers get those book offers.

In addition, email campaigns also use automations.  This means that you can set up your email campaigns, with specific requirements, and let them send automatically. This does wonders in terms of saving time.

Use Engaging Content, Such as Videos

If you want your email open rates to stay consistent, content is the way to do it.  Subscribers want relevant and engaging content, because that’s what they signed up for in the first place.  Of course, a part of that is receiving discounts or offers, but as a whole, good content is imperative.

Focus on the copy, the written aspect of your emails, as well as the visual aspects.  Graphics should be eye catching, and in this regard, video does very well with keeping customer attention. This is a large part of the value of email in your small business.
